J.O.B. The Hip-Hopera

By Kat Kramer

Hey folks, you should all hurry down to the Stella Adler Theatre to check out a unique new musical that’s got critics raving. The world premiere of Sable & Batalion’s hugely inventive “J.O.B. The Hip-Hopera” is one of the most fun evenings I’ve had in the theatre for some time. It explores the eternal question: Why do bad things happen to good people, yo? It’s written by Jerome Sable and Eli Batalion, who also star as two rappers who retell the Old Testament story of Job as an allegory of contemporary corporate life in the music business.

They have created an entertaining, refreshing and energetic show also starring an ensemble of fine dancers, vocalist Nikkema Taylor and DJ Creativity. It’s all done in hip-hop.

Sable & Batalion are a writing/performing team who has been friends since they were little, and they have been collaborating creatively for over 13 years. Originally from Montreal, they have become very popular on the festival circuit.

“J.O.B. – The Hip-Hopera” is directed by the innovative Stefan Novinski and choreographed by Hassan Christopher of “Company of Strangers” fame. This show is brilliant – it boasts a score blending classical music with hip-hop. The score is already being compared to Sondheim and Shakespeare. Wow!

I must say it was a slick production, with plenty of laughs and audience interaction. It’s a show that will be especially appealing to young people, or anyone wanted a change of pace from the usual revival of traditional musical theatre. Sable & Batalion are no doubt a duo to watch.
